1st World Summit of Regions on Climate Change, Saint-Malo (France)

Description:

"The Network of Regional Governments for Sustainable Development (nrg4SD) is holding the 1st World Summit of Regional Governments on Climate Change in response to increasing awareness of the essential role of Regional Governments at the international climate change agenda. Regional governments are sufficiently strategic and have the flexibility to work with other local, state and international actors, social movements, NGOs and the private sector, and are particularly well suited to understand, incorporate and take into account the specificities, vulnerabilities and identities of their own regions.

Aware of the stakes and the need for involvement at all levels of public decision-making, this Summit will bring together regions from the five continents, alongside representatives from the IPCC, UN and EU agencies and a large number of organisations and foundations working on the issue of global warming. It will aim to:

  • demonstrate the relevance of regional authorities by presenting best practices in mitigation or adaptation;
  • make it easier for the world’s regions to share experiences and skills;
  • undertake an official partnership between the United Nations and Regional Governments on the issue of climate change.

The Summit, which has the backing of the UNDP and UNEP, will also mark the official launch of a tool developed by these two bodies, specifically to help Regions as they strive to limit the greenhouse gases they produce and as they adapt to the new climate situation. The tool is aimed at the 500 world Regional Governments with an institutional scope.

The nrg4SD Network will also adopt a Policy Paper on Climate Change at the Summit, calling for an approach that combines stringent inter-regional cooperation and action on adaptation with strengthened mitigation actions, while enhancing measures on technology cooperation and provision of financial resources to support those adaptation and mitigation actions.
